The day has come: the ban against TikTok, CapCut, and other apps owned by ByteDance in the starts today (January 19). TikTok users in the US started getting the notification on the app regarding the US ban, adding that they’re “working to restore our service in the US as soon as possible.

Aside from TikTok, CapCut is also reportedly banned in the US as well since the video editing app is owned by ByteDance. Other ByteDance-owned apps like Lemon8 and Marvel Snap also face the US ban.
While it is technically only January 18 in the US, ByteDance appeared to went ahead and put all of its apps in the US in the dark since US Congress upheld its ruling that all ByteDance-owned apps (other than TikTok) will be banned starting January 19. There may be an alternative app with REDnote, It’s not yet over for TikTok, as incoming US President Donald Trump seeks to reinstate the app in the US once he steps into office on January 20. While Trump used to criticize TikTok, he credited the social media platform for connecting him to young voters, leading to his victory in the November 2024 US elections.
”I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate,” Trump said in an interview with CNBC News.
Aside from Trump’s proposal, there are talks that ByteDance might sell their US operations, with Elon Musk as one of the prospects.
