Urbana police search for suspect after 20-year-old woman killed in crash

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Urbana Police Department is searching for a driver that fled after rear-ending a car, killing one passenger and seriously injuring another.

Police responded to University and Coler Avenues at 1:55 a.m. on Sunday for a “severe traffic crash.” Officers investigated and they found that a Honda Civic and a Mitsubishi SUV were involved in the crash.

Police said the Civic was driving eastbound on University and stopped at Coler for a red light. The SUV was traveling in the same direction behind the Civic. The SUV hit the Civic, damaging both cars, and injuring some of the people inside.

The Urbana Fire Department responded to the scene. They helped remove the passengers from the car and provided lifesaving medical care.

There were five people inside the Civic and all of them were taken to the hospital. Two were released with minor injuries, two are still hospitalized, with one being in “critical condition.”

Urbana Police said a 20-year-old woman was a passenger in the Civic and she later died at the hospital. Her identity is being withheld until her family has been notified.

The driver of the SUV ran away on foot on Coler, and officers had been unable to locate them as of 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The Urbana Police Department is investigating and said they will provide more details on Monday. They also ask that anyone with information to call 217-384-2320. To make an anonymous tip, call Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477, visit their website, or use the “P3 Tips” mobile app.
