SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A man was arrested early Sunday morning after authorities with the Salt Lake City Police Department were informed of a burglary in progress at a bike shop, according to officials.
Officers responded to the scene — a shop at 2107 South 700 East — around 1:40 a.m., and saw through a video feed that the suspect was still inside the business. The glass of the building’s front door was smashed and a metal security gate was “bent back,” SLCPD said in a press release.
“During their search outside, officers saw a man matching the suspect’s description. The officers ordered for the man to stop running, but he refused,” police said.
The suspect — identified as Ryan Brenner, 36 — was taken into custody in a parking lot nearby after a brief chase, according to SLCPD.
Brenner was arrested for several charges, including burglary, theft, possession of burglary tools, causing property damage, possession of drug paraphernalia, failing to stop at the command of a police officer, and interfering with a police officer, SLCPD said.
“The damage to the business is estimated to be more than $1,500 but under $4,999 and the amount of merchandise stolen is valued at more than $500 but under $1,499,” police said Sunday.
Police said there has been an uptick in bike shop burglaries since late October, which prompted an increased police presence around bike shops.
The suspect in several other cases reportedly forced entry into the shops and stole expensive e-bikes and other items — however, detectives have not yet determined if Brenner is connected to those other incidents.
As of Sunday, Brenner was only being charged in connection the the burglary on Nov. 10.
Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
