LIVE UPDATES: Feast of the Jesus Nazareno

MANILA, Philippines — Every year on January 9, starting in 1787, devout Catholics flock to Quiapo Church in Manila to join the procession — called “Traslacion” — of the Black Nazarene, accompanying the image as it was pulled from the Luneta through several streets of the capital until it returns to the church.

On the eve of the Feast of the Black Nazarene, thousands of devotees make their way to the Quirino Grandstand to line for the “Pahahalik” — where they take turns kissing the image (though in recent, mainly due to sanitary concerns, they have been advised to limit themselves to wiping a handkerchief on the icon).
