ELY, Minn. (FOX 9) – Police said an 80-year-old woman died after being engulfed in flames while on a motorized scooter outside a care center in northern Minnesota.
Fatal fire in Ely
What we know:
On Jan. 6, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a fire outside a care center in Ely, Minnesota. The 911 caller explained a woman on a motorized scooter outside the building had been “fully engulfed” in flames, according to a press release.
Staff members managed to get the woman off of the scooter, but she sustained severe burns as a result of the blaze. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital and later airlifted to a hospital in Duluth, where she died from her injuries.
Police said a staff member was also injured during the incident and received treatment at the hospital, but has since been released.
What we don’t know:
Police did not say what caused the fire, but the State Fire Marshall is investigating the incident.
