MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — The Mattoon Fire Department responded to a house fire Wednesday morning and quickly put out a fire in the bathroom.
The department was dispatched to South 19th Street near Essex Avenue at 7:51 a.m. for a possible structure fire. Crews then arrived on scene to the single-story duplex at 7:54 a.m. and found light smoke coming from the front door.
Crews entered the structure to find a fire in the bathroom, which they quickly extinguished within five minutes. After putting the fire out, they set up a fan to ventilate the smoke from the structure.
The cause of the fire was determined to be “combustibles” that were too close to the hot water heater according to the fire department. These initial combustibles caused the fire to spread to the vanity cabinet.
Damage caused by the fire was limited to the vanity and the flooring around the water heater. No occupants of the duplex were displaced as a result and there were no reported injuries. All units were able to clear the scene by 8:45 a.m.
During the fire, the Mattoon department was assisted by Coles/Moultrie 911 (Ccom), Mattoon Police Department and Charleston Fire Department.
