CHICAGO — HOKTUAH on an Illinois license plate?
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias spat on that thang.
The infamous instructions from a woman’s drunken Nashville street interview that went viral won’t be seen on an Illinois license plate this year.
It was one of 300 rejected by Giannoulias’ sleuths during 2024 for being offensive, inflammatory or difficult to read.
Giannoulias didn’t release the full naughty list, but provided some highlights:

- ILLCUTU
- HOHOHOE
- ABADMF
- WEENIE
- DUCKOFF
- UGEWANG
- THICCAF
In an announcement video, the secretary of state reads off the highlights with some commentary.
“SHIDDED? Did you really think we weren’t going to catch that?” he asks.
“And new to this list, this year, and surprising no one, HOKTUAH,” he says with a laugh. “You knew that one was bound to show up this year.”
“Illinoisans consistently display a great deal of creativity when choosing their
customized license plates, but the plates that hit the road must meet the standards of
good taste and decency,” Giannoulias said. “Our team are well-versed in lecherous
language and sneaky swearing, all of which are rejected and placed on our permanent
prohibited list.”
The state has the right to reject any vanity plate request that “creates a connotation that is offensive to good taste and decency,” according to Illinois’ Vehicle Code.
It also can reject combinations that could be hard to read and throw off police, such as MWMWMWM or OOQQOO, which got the thumbs down last year.
There are now more than 8,000 license plates on the permanent banned list. In 2023, plates that made the list were:

There are more than 800,000 personalized or vanity plates in the state of Illinois. They cost $94 for letters and $141 for a combination of letters and numbers. You can look for available plates on the Pick-a-Plate feature on the website – apps.ilsos.gov/pickaplate.
