Sangamon County declares winter weather emergency

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Sangamon County has declared a winter weather emergency as more snow falls on Central Illinois Friday.

The emergency went into effect immediately upon its declaration on Friday morning, and it only affects county highways. As of 10 a.m., the emergency is at Level 1, the lowest level in the county’s winter emergency system.

At Level 1, roadways are considered hazardous, drivers may encounter blowing and drifting snow and roadways may be icy. Drivers are advised to use caution while driving.

County officials said road conditions will be monitored throughout the day and, if necessary, the emergency level may be adjusted based upon changing conditions. Notices will be posted to Sangamon County’s website and social media pages.

Declarations of winter weather emergencies are made by the Chairman of the Sangamon County Board after consulting with the Sheriff’s Office, the Office of Emergency Management, and Highway Department and other departments and agencies if necessary.
