PETALING JAYA: The government hopes to have 500,000 students enrolled in technical and vocational education and training programmes this year, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid, who chairs the national TVET council, said applications were now open for the programmes being offered in 1,398 training institutions.

“We anticipate a strong response to the courses being offered,” he said. The courses have been tailored to meet employer demands and memoranda of agreement have been signed between TVET institutions and employers.

“This means that upon completing their courses, TVET graduates will immediately be employed,” he said, according to Bernama.

Zahid, who is also rural and regional development minister, said GiatMara’s Malaysia-China Institute had 5,125 spots open for Malaysian students to undergo TVET training in China. All spots will be filled this year.

Chinese companies are providing full scholarships for Malaysian students but have requested that flight tickets be funded by organisations in Malaysia, he said.
