A dad of two has been shot in the back outside his home in southeast Victoria while a young girl was asleep inside.
Emergency services were called to a block of units on Fahey St in Wonthaggi, in Gippsland – about 132km southeast of Melbourne – about 2am on Sunday after reports of an altercation.
CCTV footage showed the moment a ute drove past the block of units, knocking down a light pole and smashing into nearby cars.
Father of two Kevin Mclean, who was visiting a woman at the Wonthaggi home when an altercation broke out with another man, was shot in the back.
The sound of gunfire woke up neighbours and a 10-year-old girl who was asleep inside the unit.
A neighbour recalled seeing Mr Mclean staggering outside the property after the shooting.
“He just kind of waddled and was groaning and said, ‘This hurts, this hurts’,” the resident told 9News.
The gunman fled the scene, followed by an accomplice riding a motorbike.
Mr Mclean was flown to The Alfred hospital in a non-life-threatening condition, requiring emergency surgery to remove the bullet fragments from his back.
Victoria Police has launched an investigation into the shooting and is establishing the exact circumstances of the incident.
Authorities believe the gunman and Mr Mclean are known to each other.
