Patrick Fishburn nearly wins first PGA Tour event

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – Former BYU star Patrick Fishburn had visions of winning his first PGA Tour event. He was leading after two rounds, and one shot back after three rounds before ending up tied for sixth.

“My game felt really good and then on Saturday as well, it felt like, you know I played pretty good,” Fishburn said. “A few short putts, but, it was definitely a good start to the year.”

Fishburn’s putter cooled off on the weekend, and he felt like that cost him a chance to win.

“Overall, you know, I made some long ones, missed some short ones,” he said. “It was kind of a rollercoaster on the greens.”

But around the greens, Fishburn was solid. He holed out three chip shots, all for birdies.

“I had three chip ins,” he said. “A lot of them, I think all three of them were coming in a little hot, but that’s where that’s why the flag sticks there. That’s where I was trying to aim at least.”

His aim now is to continue to get better. He feels like he has the game to win on the Tour, he just needs the experience.

“So I think I’ve been hitting the shots that I need to to win,” Fishburn said. “It’s just maybe not making the right time at the right time or getting the key up and down here and there. I feel like my game’s getting better each week, each year. So, it’s just finding ways to put four rounds together. In golf every single week, you can always say ‘would have, could have, should have,’ but you just got to take it as it is and learn from your mistakes and try to better.”

He makes it a point to learn, and does so my taking notes after every round.

“There’s always something to learn and the only way you can learn is to be right in the fire,” he said. “I take a journal, I take notes after every round. So, I have some things that I can write down to try to try to do better next time.”

Besides getting that first win, Fishburn’s goal is get inside the top 50, because that would qualify him for the signature events, which provides more opportunities to make more money.

“Kind of the goal for someone like me is to try to get in those elevated events,” he said. “The key is to get in those signature events, and then once you’re in there, you can rack up more points and kind of get ahead of the game.”
