Artic winds, freezing temps in store for Utah's weekend

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Friday, Utah! Today will be a case of rinse and repeat with temperatures and conditions similar to yesterday. High temperatures will be in the mid-30s to low-40s in the north, and mid-40s to low-50s in the south.

Clear skies are expected in southern Utah while northern valleys continue to battle inversion haze. Poor air quality is expected to hang onto the Wasatch Front, the northwest desert, and Cache Valley through today. Fortunately, we catch the western tip of a storm system passing through Colorado which will help clear the pollution.

The bottom line? Light snow showers are possible late tonight into tomorrow. An arctic blast brings dangerously cold weather for the weekend.

We have potential for snow showers tonight and tomorrow, but with very limited accumulation. The first snowflakes will probably fall in the higher elevation as early as this evening before reaching valleys late tonight/early tomorrow. Snow totals will be light, northern mountains could get one to four inches with three to six inches in the Upper Cottonwoods. The Wasatch Front will get up to an inch, but many places could see nothing at all.

There’s about a 50/50 chance for lake-effect snow Saturday morning from Bountiful to the Salt Lake and Tooele Valleys. If lake-effect occurs, some valleys could have as much as three inches and the Upper Cottonwoods up to eight inches.

By Saturday afternoon the snow will have moved on, apart from a few mountain flurries holding into the early evening. While the snow will have little impact, the cold will be brutal.

After today, most valleys may not break freezing temperatures until midweek. Highs will be in the 30s and 20s with overnight lows plunging to the low teens and single digits, higher elevations could drop into the negatives. Add the breeze into the mix and we could see dangerous wind chill values.

From late tonight through Saturday morning the wind chill may drop near zero at times on valley floors, and well below zero for higher terrain. Saturday night into Sunday morning will feel even colder, with wind chill potentially dropping below zero even for valleys. Some optimistic weather models suggest southwest Wyoming could feel colder than 25° below zero, but it’s still too far out to say.

We hop back on a warming trend by Tuesday, but until then, bundle up! We’ll give you the latest updates in our 4Warn Weather forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah!
