BREAKING: Freeland announces run for Liberal leadership

Chrystia Freeland will seek the leadership of the Liberal party.

The former finance minister and deputy prime minister made the announcement Friday (Jan. 17) morning.

On her X social media page, Freeland said, “At a time when President Donald Trump is threatening our country, it’s time to fight for Canada.”

Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, 59, announced his intention Thursday to seek the Liberal leadership.

The Liberal Party of Canada is expected to hold a leadership election in March.

Freeland, 56, resigned from the Liberal cabinet on Dec. 16, before delivering the fall economic statement, noting policy disagreements with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
