Right then, tennis fans, gather round! The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced its World Champions for 2024, and it’s a double whammy of top-notch talent.
Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek have both scooped the prestigious awards, capping off a truly memorable year for the sport.
Swiatek’s stellar season: French Open victory and olympic bronze
Iga Swiatek has clinched the women’s singles award after a phenomenal year on the court. She pipped Aryna Sabalenka to the post, which is no mean feat considering Sabalenka’s own impressive performances. Swiatek’s highlights include a brilliant victory at the French Open, four WTA 1000 titles, and a well-deserved Olympic bronze medal at the Paris Games. She also played a key role in Poland’s run to the Billie Jean King Cup semi-finals, showing her dedication to both individual and team success. While Sabalenka bagged the Australian and US Open titles and finished the year as World No.1, Swiatek’s consistent high-level performances across various tournaments swayed the decision.
Sinner makes history as the first italian to claim the prestigious ITF Award
Jannik Sinner has made history by becoming the first Italian to ever win the ITF World Champion award. What a legend! He finished 2024 at the top of the rankings with a staggering 73-6 win-loss record. His year was packed with victories, including triumphs at the Australian and US Open, the ATP Finals, and leading Italy to a successful defence of the Davis Cup crown. This is a proper achievement for Sinner and for Italian tennis as a whole. It’s a testament to his hard work, dedication, and sheer talent on the court.
ITF’s objective criteria: Spotlight on Grand Slams and team competitions
The ITF has made it clear that these awards are based on “objective criteria,” taking into account all results throughout the year. However, they place particular emphasis on Grand Slam tournaments, the World Cup of Tennis competitions (like the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup), and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. As ITF President David Haggerty put it, “Last year was a memorable year for our sport with the staging of the Olympic and Paralympic Games alongside our traditional team events. And we see with several of our award winners that representing their country inspired them to even greater achievements in 2024.” Whilst both players were subject to doping cases last year, the ITF’s decision to award them the titles shows that their achievements on the court outweighed any controversy. This year has been a real treat for tennis fans, with thrilling matches and inspiring performances from these two world-class athletes. It’ll be exciting to see what they do next!
