Ever since the enormous success of Hogwarts Legacy in early 2023, there haven’t been many other reasons to celebrate at Warner Bros. Games. While Mortal Kombat 1 has done alright and offers some gorgeous, gory fighting game action, the company has had to face the disappointing relaunch of Multiversus and, most notoriously, the complete flop that was Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League. Now, WB Games’ top dog, president David Haddad, is on the way out.
There’s no denying that, despite the recent poor run for WB Games, Haddad has overseen some decent games during his ten-year run as president. Batman Arkham Asylum, Injustice 2, and two of the best Mortal Kombat games in MK11 and the most-recent MK1. While maybe not a critical hit, Hogwarts Legacy is also one of WB’s biggest ever hits. However, there’s no escaping those high-profile disasters. Despite Rocksteady’s knack for creating incredible single-player games, it instead gave us live service punching bag Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League, which ended bringing new content to the game just a year on from launch.
Despite having some great fighting games among its catalog, the promising, IP-mashing Multiversus has also underwhelmed. Huge influxes of players descended upon the game for its original early access release and its relaunch, but it has struggled to retain them.
Now, Haddad is set to leave the company. “It has been an absolute pleasure working on and building our iconic gaming franchises, and I will continue to be an enthusiastic supporter of this talented team’s future endeavors,” he tells Variety. “I look forward to working on the next chapter of my career and will always be grateful for my time with Warner Bros. Games.”
He will be remaining at WB for the next three months to help find and onboard his replacement.
It’s safe to say that, unless it’s got several unannounced projects in the chamber ready to release this year, the future pipeline for WB Games is looking extremely thin. Even though that’s very concerning, it’s something that another exec has acknowledged in his leaving message for Haddad.
“David has thoughtfully and purposefully chosen a time when our release schedule is lighter which will help minimize disruption to our ongoing projects and strategic plans and allow this team to smoothly prepare for its next record-breaking title,” Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming and Games CEO and president JB Perrette says.
Warner Bros. has already said that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is a top priority, so we know that will appear eventually, but it’s likely a couple of years away at least. The only other major upcoming project we know about is the Wonder Woman game from Middle-earth dev Monolith, but very little has been heard about that project since its reveal all the way back in 2021.
