Hi. Starting my taxes. I've never hit exempt, never messed up on my taxes. I'm extremely low income. Section 8, head of household of 4 (2 kids non working spouse), and my total income YTD is still less than the standardized amount they offer when you file.
I've worked for my current position since April. Got my W2 and imported, went through everything to see a high number that I attributed to this being the highest paying job I've ever held (which isn't saying much).
Everything is going fine, no errors, it's still giving me the child tax credit and all that, no red flags popping up………..but the number started to seem too high so I asked some of my associates about why it says I owe 0 federal taxes in box 2 and I'm getting advice that this is a huge error and that my W2 must be incorrect. My 21 yr old sister accidentally hit exempt in 2024 and she says her taxes went this way as well but I know I did not hit exempt.
Is there any way this isn't true? I checked 2023 return briefly and to my surprise it said I owed nothing towards federal as well and it says I owe nothing towards IRS still.
We're really counting on my tax return as the head of household.
What are some circumstances that could cause this? If this is an error can it be fixed or will it have to wait until next year? I should still be able to claim the child tax breaks/EIC, right?
I've reached out to my employer before submitting as I'm waiting on a seperate W2 from a previous position anyway but I'm trying to understand and not freak out.
I checked my last few paystubs and deductions were made on numerous levels.
Advice, input, etc?
