Hong Kong authorities have temporarily barred a contractor from bidding on public works following the death of a labourer who was hit by a metal beam section and fell at least three metres at a construction site on Friday last week.
The Development Bureau said on Monday the temporary ban was effective immediately and it had ordered the contractor to conduct an independent safety audit and submit an improvement action plan.
The bureau said it would only consider lifting the suspension once improvement measures were shown to be effective.
The contractor has not been named.
A 61-year-old welding worker died at the contractor’s construction site at the intersection of Pat Tsz Wo Street and Tsung Tau Ha Road in Fo Tan. He was hit by a metal beam section and fell at least three metres.
The worker was certified dead at the scene.
