Reviewing 2024 Destruction in EVE Online – The Year of the Fake Kill Mail

Reviewing 2024 Destruction in EVE Online – The Year of the Fake Kill Mail

I did it last year so I am going to do it again this year.  I have concatenated the twelve monthly killdump.csv files from the Monthly Economic reports for 2024 and pulled them into PowerBI to see if I can find anything at all interesting to say about a full year of data.  The odds of being interesting are not in my favor, but when has that ever stopped me before.

EVE Online nerds harder

As noted previously, I also wanted to compare the totals to what CCP announced in their extremely brief glance at destruction in the year end edition of The Pulse, which featured one big number.

Specifically, CCP’s end of year video announced that total ISK destruction had been 966,404,782,603,070.

The number from The Pulse

That is a big number, and I’ll just shorthand that to 966 trillion ISK for ease of use.

That number is SO big as to be ridiculous when compared to what CCP has reported in the MER every month, which totals up to 521,008,792,942,469 ISK, or 521 trillion ISK to keep things manageable.

This is the same problem I noted last year, where the community team is announcing numbers that are not anchored in reality relative to what CCP tells us elsewhere.  Last year I considered that possibly the community team doesn’t know how to interpret numbers from the MER, speculating that they were adding up the “loss” and “destruction” numbers, which would be incorrect.

However, this year loss+destruction doesn’t get us anywhere close to the number announced in The Pulse, falling a good 88 trillion shy of the mark, so I have changed my theory.

I have changed my theory and now just assume that the community team doesn’t look at the MER at all… and it wouldn’t take much to convince me that CCP doesn’t look at the MER at all either.  It certainly isn’t great that they put together these number for us then ignore them otherwise. The MER could very well be just some data they dump on us monthly without ever looking at it as what it reports certainly doesn’t seem to influence any decisions they make.

Anyway, I suspect that the community team just adds up numbers from zKillboard and publishes those.

That is not necessarily a bad thing.

One of the things I have noted in the past is that CCP is not very good at estimating the value of ships and in their “all embedded in HTML so I cannot extract any useful data from it” monthly battles summary they report both the CCP estimated value of the destruction as well as the zKillboard value, which is inevitably much higher.

What that means is what the community team says is completely detached from what CCP reports in the MER… and I also think they don’t even look at the MER, but that is just my bias at this point.

And with that you might well ask if I should just stop right here and cease this fruitless monthly and annual reporting on destruction in New Eden if my numbers aren’t… real?  Is “real” the word I am looking for to describe pretend numbers in a pretend location in a video game?

Anyway, I am invested already, so I won’t stop.  Not yet anyway.  As I repeated often during the SuperData chart era, even incorrect data has value if collected in a consistent way.  Absolute values may be incorrect, but valid trends will still be visible.  And the actual count of losses is likely to be more accurate, it is just ISK that CCP is bad at.  For all its merits, zKillboard can’t grab every loss mail.  So off we go, fingers in ears, loudly going, “Lalalalalala I can’t hear you!” as you raise your objections about the data I am about to present.

Overall Summary – Was 2024 a Good Year for New Eden?

At first glance 2024 certainly looks like it was a good year for losses, considering that there wasn’t any sort of major war in null sec.  But we’ll get to regions and locations for losses.  The total values for 2024 were:

  • 2024 Total Losses: 5,886,112
  • 2024 Total Value: 521.01 trillion ISK
  • Avg Losses per month: 490,509
  • Avg Value Lost per month: 43.42 trillion ISK

The previous benchmark year was 2020, when the pandemic got us all to stay home and have a really big war in null sec where everybody piled on Goons and we had Guinness Book world record setting battles and lost trillions of ISK over somewhat minor objectives.  What did 2020 look like and how did it square up to 2024?

  • 2020 Total Losses 5,674,137 (2024 had 211,975 more losses)
  • 2020 Total Value 459.45 trillion ISK (2024 had 61.56 trillion ISK more in losses)
  • Avg Losses per month 472,845
  • Avg Value Lost per month 38.29 trillion ISK

By the numbers, 2024 looks like it eclipsed the activity of 2020, without even a major null sec war.  How can that be?  Is low sec just that hot still with the Havoc expansion?

Well, the difference in total losses is inflated by the now rampant AIR Career Program skill point farming.  As we’ll get to later, there were almost 400K losses in Uitra, including almost 300K shuttle losses, all due to farming skill points.  That wasn’t happening on such a grand scale until 2022 or so.

Meanwhile, the ISK lost… that is mostly due to long term effects of CCP’s ill considered scarcity plan which made everything more expensive.  The game hasn’t recovered from that still and CCP continues to stand by its mineral bottlenecks in a “one step forward, two steps back” approach to maintaining scarcity.

So you can see more than a 5 trillion gap in the average losses per month… and there is an underlying average price per loss of 82.29 million ISK in 2020 versus 88.54 million ISK per loss in 2024… is suppressed by the fact that a huge number of the losses are shuttles blow up for AIR Career Program goals.

If you remove Uitra from the totals… you don’t even have to get to the other systems where people are doing this… 2020 remains the benchmark for activity.  2024 was the year of the AIR Career Program and the ongoing CCP ruination of the economy.

Congratulations all around!

And you should keep this in mind when you look at things like Jester’s charts, where logins are also no doubt being inflated somewhat by people sitting in Uitra working on skill point farming.  I mean sure, they are logged into and playing the game, but if people are drawn to what is arguably an exploit, is that a good thing?  You make the call!

Anyway, just to round this out, the data for the intervening years starting with 2023:

  • 2023 Total Losses: 5,212,934 (2024 had 673,178 more losses)
  • 2023 Total Value: 478.99 trillion ISK (2024 had 159.51 trillion ISK more in losses)
  • Avg Losses per month: 434,411
  • Avg Value Lost per month: 39.92 trillion ISK

2022:

  • 2022 Total Losses: 4,497,590 (2024 had 1,388,522 more losses)
  • 2022 Total Value: 361.49 trillion ISK (2024 had 159.51 trillion trillion ISK more in losses)
  • Avg Losses per month: 374,799
  • Avg Value Lost per month: 30.12 trillion

2021:

  • 2021 Total Losses: 4,899,115 (2024 had 986,997 more losses)
  • 2021 Total Value: 408.49 trillion ISK (2024 had 112.52 trillion ISK more in losses)
  • Avg Losses per month 408,260
  • Avg Value Lost per month 34.04 trillion

In the end, we’re better off than the 2022 and the Year of Disappointment, but 2020 remains a high point for the game… and apparently a period that CCP has decided was a bad for New Eden and which it has actively preventing from occurring again.

Top 20 Most Frequent Losses by Class and Hull

The usual suspects that I pull in every month. Capsules dominate the count because everybody has one and a lot of them get destroyed.

Class  Count  % of 2024 Hull  Count  % of 2024
Capsule           1,482,459 25.19% Capsule        1,465,773 24.90%

Mining Barge                47,473 0.81% Gnosis              37,112 0.63%

I guess is capsules make up 25% of losses, the chance of you being podded… or self destructing… is about 50-50?  You get away about half the time.  Or maybe people don’t care about pods.  I tend to try and save even an empty pod unless I need to get back into a fight just to deny the enemy a kill mail.  But I am like that.

Meanwhile, 1 in 8 losses in New Eden are shuttles… even with capsules in the calculation of the whole.  If we remove capsules that brings the loss total down to 4,403,653 and the percentage of the remainder is about 17.5% of losses, which is a little more than 1 in 6 losses in New Eden.

Again, this is the corruption of the data by the AIR Career Program… and I do not doubt I will feel the need to bring that up again a few more times as we progress through the data.

Hulls Recorded as Lost only Once in 2024

For the monthly data I usually filter out the POS structures and fighter groups.  But given 12 months of data, why not see what only got blown up once in 2024 according to CCP?

Hull Count
Advanced Small Ship Assembly Array 1
Angel Large AutoCannon Battery 1
Biochemical Silo 1
Caedes 1
Caiman 1
Civilian Gallente Shuttle 1
Cobra 1
Cynosural System Jammer 1
Dark Blood Control Tower Small 1

Federation Navy Siren 1
Guristas Control Tower Small 1
Guristas XL Torpedo Battery 1
Hybrid Polymer Silo 1
Jump Bridge 1

‘Prometheus’ Fortizar 1
Sansha Control Tower Small 1
Scarab II 1
Serpentis Control Tower Medium 1

Syndicate Mobile Large Warp Disruptor 1
System Scanning Array 1
Taipan 1
Thukker Component Assembly Array 1
Utu 1
Vanquisher 1
Vendetta 1
Whiptail 1

That is 32 hulls or structures that were blown up exactly once, about half of which are POS related or fighter groups.  The rest… well, those are some rare items, with some irreplaceable (and very undervalued by CCP’s calculations) Alliance Tournament ships along with some faction capitals.  I’ve linked out to the interesting ones over at zKillmail for your appreciation.

Top 20 Total ISK Lost by Hull Type

This is where the money went I suppose, where the ISK was burned up by explosions.

Capsules, which make up 25% of the count of losses only make up 8% of the ISK lost… but that is still enough to keep them at the top of the list.

The Top 20 Hulls with the Most ISK per Hull Lost

Just to flip this around, this is the same data set as above, but sorted to show the top 20 ISK per loss hulls.  I don’t usually do this table with the monthly posts because it tends to be the usual suspects… also, it exposes where CCP’s valuation is garbage… but for an annual post we might as well get it on the record.

Hull  Count  Sum of ISK Lost % of 2024 ISK Per Loss
Erebus                        2 .18 trillion 0.03% 87.71 billion

Nomad                   113 1.53 trillion 0.29% 13.53 billion
Ark                   200 2.43 trillion 0.47% 12.17 billion

That all the AT or faction ships I highlighted on the lost once in 2024 table are not on this list is because CCP’s only values ships based on what their hull price is on the open market.  But nobody sells AT ships on the open market.  The might do an auction on contract, but mostly these are deals… and rare deals… done directly.

The great ISK faucet of Pochven; there was no surprise in it coming in first place for ISK.  It is an ISK sink as well.

For the count, there was a time when I would point out that The Forge is where Jita is located and that the more players concentrate, the more losses show up.  Instead I now had to point out that The Forge is where Uitra is located as well, and it posted 3x the loss count of Jita, as the next table will show.

I will declare that ISK losses is the real measurement for how destructive a system really is.  Ahbazon, a cross-roads low sec system astride the short route between Jita and Amarr is a hot spot for interdicting traffic.  By taking Ahbazon the route between the two trade hubs is 12 gates.  But if you want the safe route is 46 gates, causing people to decide to risk it.

The short route from Amarr to Jita… the arbitrage trail of tears

Not that trade interdiction is all that happens in Ahbazon, but it is part of its fame.

Meanwhile, Uitra makes a mockery of the destruction count side of the table, where it sits in first place with three times to number as second place Jita.  But when it comes to ISK Jita is still in second place which Uitra is way down in 3,344th position.  Uitra remains the center of New Eden for staged, fake kills.

2024 and the Uitra Connection

Since I am apparently not going to let go of the whole Uitra thing quite yet, let’s just drag some more numbers out into the light of day, including what blew up in Uitra in 2024.

As one expected, there were a crazy number of shuttle explosions in Uitra, along with corvettes.

The highest total of losses are for the Gnosis hull, which has to be from people forgetting to correctly challenge a duel and getting CONCORDed.  As I described in my post about doing the AIR Career Program, it is the ideal ship for getting electronic and capacitor warfare options handled as well as shield and armor reps.  That has to be from people being sloppy.  I cannot imagine people throwing away a 40 million combat battlecruiser hull on purpose.

Just to nail down how out of wack Uitra’s shuttle loss numbers are, here are the top 20 systems for shuttle losses in 2024.

System Region Class  Count  % of 2024 Sum of ISK Lost
Uitra The Forge Shuttle             290,165 37.83% 6.52 billion

Hadaugago Heimatar Shuttle                  3,832 0.50% .07 billion
Tama The Citadel Shuttle                  3,564 0.46% 17.65 billion

Uitra accounts for almost 38% of the 767,041 shuttles blown up in New Eden in 2024.  You can see a few other career agent systems on the list, but Uitra is the place to go.

Finally, who is involved with the kills.  Here are the top 20 corps for shuttle kills in 2024.

Shuttle Claire Leanne Oult Corporation               5,398 0.70%

It is interesting that some people just stay in NPC corps to do their skill point farming while others apparently want the AIR Career Program credit for joining a corp.

If you know your corps you will be able to spot some of the big NPC corps as well as leading corporations from the big null sec alliances on the killer end of the equation.

There is a similar trend on the victim side of the table, though EVE Uni shows up there.  Sorry team.

And you may also note a couple corps whose ISK totals are so small as to not register.  You will find that their kills and losses are in Uitra and that they are on the shuttle killing corp top 20. Go figured.

Top 20 Alliances for Kills and Losses

Again, lots of the usual null sec suspects on that list, but you have to be an alliance to play in null sec.

That said, a full 2,413,515 of the 5,886,112 kills in New Eden in 2024, roughly 41%, involved players that were not in an alliance.

Upwell Structures Destroyed in 2024

I wanted to look at this one specifically because it was the OTHER state that appeared in the end of the year summary episode of The Pulse.  The Pulse declared Upwell structure losses at 8,149.

The Pulse Upwell Destruction Count

Do the combined 2024 MER numbers agree with that?  Of course not!  Here they are:

Structure  Count  Sum of ISK Lost
Athanor        3,436 6,229.45 billion
Astrahus        2,506 3,628.91 billion
Raitaru        1,332 2,238.43 billion
Fortizar            414 4,849.00 billion
Ansiblex Jump Gate            246 84.96 billion
Azbel            183 1,397.73 billion
Tatara              94 984.30 billion
  Sotiyo              90 89.49 billion
Tenebrex Cyno Jammer              48 2.69 billion
Pharolux Cyno Beacon              37 6.25 billion
Keepstar                9 26.75 billion
‘Prometheus’ Fortizar                1 1.62 billion

That totals up to 8,396 structures.  So why the difference?  My guess would be that the community team just looked at zKillboard and, as we know, not every kill lands there.

That said, the gap between the two numbers is 247, which isn’t huge I suppose… and also happens to be exactly the same as all the Ansiblex Jump Gates plus the ‘Prometheus’ Fortizar.  Is that the real difference?  I don’t know… but it could be.  The accountant in my does not like how those line up.

The POS Code Remains Safe in 2024

Finally, a look at POS, of player owned starbase, losses in 2024.  I won’t post ALL the POS modules that were blown up in 2024, but here is a list of all of the POS towers destroyed in 2024.

That adds up to 4,713 towers blown up for a total of 726.26 billion ISK destroyed.

The legend says that an old gypsy woman declared that New Eden will only survive so long as the POS code remains in the EVE Online code base.  CCP has, at times, declared their intent to remove the noble POS from the game, taking the POS code with it.  But it has never come to pass.

Some say that is because CCP still sees the utility of the POS or that the developer time to remove the code is not worth the effort.  And some believe that Hilmar looked into the eyes of the gypsy woman as she made this declaration and blinked… only to open his eyes again to find she had disappeared.  Or maybe she was never there.  But the company seems to not want to chance fate, so you can still manufacture, deploy, and destroy POSes in the game.

2024 Monthly Destruction Posts

Just the monthly posts if you want to go back into data for a more specific point in 2024.

Notes

Finally, just a technical note, how did I concatenate those files?

I renamed them all to add in the month and pulled each into a single directory, so there were a dozen files there with a name like “killdump_04.csv.”  Then I opened up a command prompt in Windows and used the command:

copy *.csv combined2024killdump.csv

That went through and pulled all the .csv files into a single .csv as named in the command.

Then I used my standard monthly review template in PowerBI and pointed it at that file, waited a while because it takes a bit to parse 900MB of .csv data.

I did not have any errors this time because I remembered to go in and remove I had left the first row, with the titles, from all but the first file in Notepad++.  Piece of cake, all months together in one file.

As it turned out I totally lost my Notepad++ notes about doing this, so the fact that I included this section in the 2023 post paid off.  Adding it again so I will be able to find it in 2026.
