One Person Killed In Galewood Metra Crash

GALEWOOD — One person was fatally struck by a Metra train at the Narragansett Avenue crossing in Galewood Tuesday morning, according to officials.

A train headed for Union Station hit a car at the Narragansett crossing, which is near the Galewood Metra Station, around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, a Metra spokesperson said.

The car’s driver was killed and it appears there were no other passengers, the spokesperson said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet identified the victim.

Trains on the North Central Service line and the Milwaukee District West Line were both delayed due to the crash, according to Metra.

A little over two weeks ago, a Norwood Park woman was killed by a Metra train at the Nagle Avenue crossing. Over the last 15 years, four people have died at the Nagle Avenue crossing. The Illinois Commerce Commission has plans to install four quadrant gates at the problematic crossing.
