Napa Sheriff Flags Phone Scam

NAPA COUNTY, CA — The Napa County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a phone scam involving a caller with a spoofed number who attempts to extract payments for bogus claims of unpaid fines or jury duty violations.

Officials said the unsolicited calls appeared to come from the 707 area code, and the person on the other end of the line identified themselves as Sheriff Oscar Ortiz while sporting a curious accent.

“The sheriff, captains, lieutenants, sergeants, and deputies will never call you to try and get you to ‘take care of a fine/warrant, or jury duty failure,’ with payments over the phone,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post. “And Sheriff Ortiz does not have a southern accent!”

The sheriff’s office advises residents who receive a similar call to “just hang up.”
