Warm and dry this weekend, much colder next week

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Saturday, Utah! High pressure in place over the region today is pulling in some warmer air from the southwest, so temperatures will remain about 10° above average across the region. It’ll stay dry with mostly sunny skies and light winds for our Saturday.

Sunday’s shaping up to be another lovely day, but we will likely begin to see some high clouds rolling in. Highs will be around 5-15° above normal. Highs across the north will be in the low to mid 70s, and low to mid 80s for SW Utah.

A big weather change begins to move into the western half of the country on Monday. A deep trough from the Pacific will arrive on Monday, bringing gusty winds Sunday afternoon and increasing moisture and wind into Monday. A strong cold front is set to sweep through Utah from Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning, bringing cold, moist air. Expect some rain and snow showers along and behind the front, with chances of rain increasing Monday evening. Temps will drop fast, highs will plummet 10-20° below normal on Tuesday.

With the cold air sticking around, we could see some scattered snow showers through Tuesday and into Wednesday, especially in places like the Cottonwood Canyons. There’s still some question about how fast the trough will move out, but most forecasts show things drying out by Wednesday afternoon.

It doesn’t look like we’ll get a ton of moisture — around 0.1-0.25″ of rain for the valleys and 0.25-1″ for the mountains. Some areas, like the Upper Cottonwoods, could see higher amounts because of steady northwest flow, and there’s even a chance for some lake-enhanced precipitation. We’ll keep an eye on the possibility of a few snowflakes in the valleys along the Wasatch Front, but the chances are pretty low right now.

Once the trough heads east on Wednesday, we’ll likely get a short break before another storm rolls in later in the week. There’s a lot of uncertainty about the next system’s strength and path, but it’s probably going to bring more cool and wet weather. So, enjoy the warmth this weekend while it lasts!
