Inmate faces drug possession charges after 'sprinkling meth into other inmates food'

DUCHESNE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A Duchesne County inmate is facing charges of drug possession within a correctional facility after he reportedly snuck a bag of methamphetamine into Duchesne County Jail and sprinkled the substance over other inmate’s food.

Kane Olvera-Swain, 20, now faces charges of possession of a controlled substance within a correctional facility, a third-degree felony; distribution, offering, or arranging distribution of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony; surreptitious administering of a certain substance, a third-degree felony; and use or possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.

According to a probable cause statement obtained by ABC4.com, officers of Duchesne County Jail searched Olvera-Swain’s tote where they found a baggy that had a white, crystalline substance consistent with that of methamphetamine.

“The inmate was shocked [officers] found meth. Officers had this inmate drug test and he was clean of any drugs,” the probable cause statement said.

Authorities also spoke with other inmates who said that Olvera-Swain had been acting strange. An inmate who had borrowed a pen from Olvera-Swain said that the pen tasted like meth. That inmate was tested for drugs and he tested positive for meth.

Police then went to interview Olvera-Swain who originally said that he knew nothing of the substance. He later reportedly admitted to authorities that he smuggled the bag of meth into the jail, and knowingly distributed it to a few other people who also knew what it was. Olvera-Swain said the other inmates took it “willingly.”

Authorities charged Olvera-Swain while he stayed in Duchesne County Jail.
