‘Reverence for the song’: Hastings Highlanders prepare for Remembrance Day

North Hastings Highlanders Pipe Band had their last rehearsal on Thursday before the Bancroft Remembrance Day Ceremony on Monday.

The band has performed at the ceremony since the 1970’s.

While the forecast for Monday does not look too cold,  Pipe Major Christopher Beatty says they are used to performing in all kinds of weather.

“We prepare, we wear sweaters, our kilts, a long shirt, long socks. So we’re pretty warm. It’s pretty good. We’ll be prepared for the weather no matter what. Snow or rain, it doesn’t matter.”

The Highlanders practice every Thursday at Bancroft’s Legion Branch 181. At this weeks rehearsal, Pipe Major Beatty shared some of the band’s role in the upcoming ceremony.

“We pipe in with two tunes and then we’ll do Flowers of the Forest after the bugle and then we’ll march ourselves out with three tunes.”

Flowers of the Forest is a Scottish folk tune and work of war poetry commemorating the defeat of the Scottish army and the death of King James IV at the battle of Flodden on September 9, 1513.

Due to the content of the lyrics and reverence for the song, the Clan Campbell Society say that Flowers of the Forest is one of the few tunes that many pipers will not perform in public unless at memorial services, funerals or in private instruction.

The North Hastings Highlanders Pipe band will be playing at the Bancroft Remembrance Day service this Monday starting at 10:45 a.m.
