MIDVALE, Utah (ABC4) — Marcus Stevenson is stepping down from his position as Midvale City mayor, effective immediately.
In a statement released on Thursday morning, Nov. 14, Stevenson said he made the decision after “much consideration.” Stevenson cited a “drastically changed” personal life as the reason behind his resignation.
“Serving as Mayor has been the most rewarding and challenging experience of my life,” said Stevenson. “I truly cannot thank our community enough for giving me the opportunity to serve in this capacity.”
Stevenson has served as the Midvale City mayor since 2022 after being elected to the position in November 2021. Stevenson was set to finish out his first term as mayor at the end of 2025.
The Midvale City Council said it accepted Stevenson’s resignation, adding that it was disappointed by the circumstances surrounding his departure. The City Council did not provide details on the circumstances, instead saying its members were now focused on ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.
In light of Stevenson’s resignation, Council Member Paul Glover has taken the duties and functions of mayor as Mayor Pro Tempore.
“The City Council has taken swift and deliberate action to maintain the stability of city operations and continue serving our residents with the high standards they deserve,” The Midvale City Council said in a statement. “We are focused on maintaining the trust of our community and will work to ensure that our leadership reflects the values of accountability and public service.”
The Council will appoint a replacement by a majority vote of council members within 30 days. The appointed replacement would finish out the remainder of Stevenon’s term until a new mayor could be elected in November 2025.
Interested applicants to fulfill Stevenon’s term in office must submit their names and qualifications online through the Midvale City website by Nov. 20.
