URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A multi-vehicle crash in Urbana sent two drivers to the hospital, one of whom was driving under the influence.
On Saturday, at 8:12 a.m., Urbana Police responded to the intersection of Cunningham Ave. and Perkins Road for a traffic crash involving two vehicles. Preliminary investigations indicate one of the vehicles, a blue Chevrolet truck, was being driven erratically and speeding northbound on Cunningham Ave.
A gold Ford Explorer was southbound on Cunningham Ave, turning east onto Perkins Road, and had the right of way. The Chevrolet collided with the Ford and also struck a light pole, causing the driver’s ejection. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.
Both drivers were taken to a local hospital for the injuries they received. 21-year-old William Daniel Melendez-Scott of Champaign, who was driving the Chevrolet, was issued a citation for DUI and disobeying a traffic control signal. He remains in critical, but stable condition. The other driver has been released from hospital care.
The Urbana Police Department was assisted by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office accident reconstruction team members on the scene. UPD is asking for assistance from businesses nearby that may have video footage of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
