Urbana's mariachi club puts students in the spotlight

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Music and a meal were on the menu at Hacienda Agave. The Champaign restaurant is celebrating its one-year anniversary, and they’re not the only ones.

The Mariachi Tigeres group also got their start about a year ago. Around 20 Urbana students and their directors performed for the restaurant on Sunday afternoon.

Each song got the crowd on their feet or clapping their hands. They said it’s been a dream come true to showcase such a special kind of music.

“I was really excited because we’ve never played at a big event like this, and we were all really excited to be here and to play,” Urbana High School junior Karen Sanchez said.

At the end of the performance, the restaurant donated a $700 check to the club. Directors said the money will go towards uniforms, instruments and more.

“It means the world to us,” club sponsor Tamra Gingold said. “I’m going to start crying. We’re being accepted by the community. People are starting to see us.”

She hopes the club turns into a class one day, giving even more students the chance to be a part of the songs.
