VINEYARD, Utah (ABC4) — A Vineyard man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2023 murder of his 4-month-old child.

Alexzander Sean Berry, 30, was sentenced on Tuesday, Nov. 26, after he pleaded guilty to aggravated murder charges in September.

In 2023, Vineyard police were called to investigate the death of a 4-month-old after the infant was found unresponsive by the parents. Emergency personnel responded and reported they found the infant in an upstairs room not breathing. Fire and rescue reported the home was in “deplorable condition.”

Upon examination, medical examiners say the child had a skull fracture and that signs pointed to the fracture being the cause of death. Several other signs of long-term abuse were present during the examination including a severe case of untreated diaper rash, bruising, and scratches.

Sergeant Spencer Cannon, public information officer for the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, told ABC4.com in 2023 that this was the worst case of child abuse and neglect he had ever seen.

“It was pretty obvious the child had not probably for most of their 4 months of life had very good conditions to live in,” Sgt. Cannon said in 2023

Officers spoke to Berry and his partner, Myra Jane Megan, in the hospital’s emergency room. Berry told police that he struck the child with a fist to the head while trying to put the child down for a nap because he was frustrated with the child’s crying. He then picked the child up and struck the child’s head on the rail of the crib, wrapped the child up, and threw the child back into the crib causing the child to strike the wall on the side of the crib.

Police later learned that nine people and two dogs lived at the residence and that the bedding area was dirty, damp, and smelly.

Megan pleaded guilty to her role in the death of the four-month-old in March of this year. She pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse, a third-degree felony, and felony obstruction of justice.

Megan was sentenced in June to up to 10 years in prison.
