OGDEN, Utah (ABC4) — Opening tomorrow night in Ogden is a staple of Christmas cheer that spans over six decades in Northern Utah, Ogden’s Christmas Village.
While Ogden rings in the Christmas season, the organizers of the Christmas Village will also be celebrating something else along with Christmas: being a nominee for the best holiday light displays in the country with hopefully more to celebrate on Dec. 6.
This year, the public display is one of 20 nominees for a spot on USA Today’s “10Best” list.
“The theme this year is ‘You Could Even Say It Glows,'” Ogden City says on Facebook. This will be year 62 of the display of lights, which started because of a vision a local family had in 1961.
“Jerry and Maxine Green and their 5-year-old son, Tommy, were standing in the most perfect spot of all for the big Christmas parade. Warmed by their growing anticipation, they eagerly looked for the parade to come. Then suddenly it began with the screaming sirens of the police cars. A big flatbed truck rushed by with Santa Claus waving to the hundreds of children who came to see him,” the city’s site says.
Young Tommy’s disappointment was evident and that moved his father to take action, and the city jumped behind it. Sixty-two years later, the city still carries on the idea and the display and festivities have garnered national recognition, earning a spot on the list of 20 finalists for USA Today’s 10Best list.
The lights are located at the Ogden Municipal Building’s property within the Ogden Municipal Garden.
The Saturday of festivities kicks off with the Santa Run 5k at 4:30 p.m. and the Holiday Electric Light Parade at 5:30 p.m. Santa will also be in town to visit Monday through Friday, 6 – 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 5–9 p.m., November 24 through December 22.
