Kyle Whittingham will return for 2025 season

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – It was a simple two word statement that made a resounding statement throughout the University of Utah athletic department.

“I’m back.”

And with that, Utes head football coach Kyle Whittingham announced he will return to the program for his 21st season in 2025.

There was speculation that Whittingham, who just turned 65 and had said before that he didn’t want to coach past age 65, would step aside. Defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley was named the “head coach in waiting” in July, and was in on the offense coordinator hire decision, which went to Jason Beck.

Whittingham is Utah’s all-time winningest coach with a record of 167-86, but the Utes are coming off one of its most disappointing seasons ever. Picked to win the Big 12 Conference, Whittingham’s team suffered a multitude of injuries and finished 5-7, failing to make a bowl game for the first time in a full season since 2013.
