The final of the 2024 European Championships takes place this Sunday between Spain and England and in both countries there is huge excitement. Can Spain win their third European title or will England finally win their first one? The atmosphere in England is growing as we get closer to the final and we can describe this increasing atmosphere as the build up to the final. The build up means a time or period of excitement before a big event (The build up to Christmas for example) and here the build up to the final means that fans (and players) get ready for the big game.

In the build up to a game there are lots of opinions about which team will win; how certain players might play and whether one player or another will be in the starting xi. So, for England there are questions around their full backs and maybe even their captain and striker Harry Kane who could be replaced with the semi-final goalscoring hero Ollie Watkins (doubtful).

In the build up to the big game there will be lots of interviews with players, coaches and pundits and there will be more TV and radio scrutiny which means that more people will be reading an, writing, listening and speaking about the big game. There is discussion here in the UK in the build up to the game that maybe there’ll be a national holiday if the England side win.
