Getting a new phone for Christmas? Your old one could help someone in crisis

Do you have an old cell phone you’re not using?

Maggie’s Resource Centre in Bancroft says it could be a lifeline for someone in crisis.

The resource centre for women experiencing domestic violence is currently looking for donations of used phones.

Executive director Melissa St. Pierre says that because victims of domestic violence sometimes have to leave in a hurry, they cannot take their cell phone. She says having a phone can be a lifeline.

“They empower the victims of domestic violence to communicate discreetly with crisis intervention services so they can talk to their lawyers if they need to, or trusted friends and family.  It enables them to seek help and immediate safety.”

St. Pierre says that at this time of year the phones are needed more than ever.

“At Christmas time there is usually more increased domestic violence situations, just due to the alcohol, social events, financial issues that can worsen during the holidays too.”

St. Pierre says that those wanting to donate their old cellphones can drop them by Maggie’s Resource Centre, or call the centre and they can arrange to pick up the phone.

You can reach Maggies at 1-613-332-3010.
