Weekly poll: the Huawei Mate X6 is launching globally, will you pick one up?

The Huawei Mate X6 was introduced at the end of November for China, but the advanced foldable is now going global. Only one version will be available, 12/512GB, which will be priced at €2,000. Huawei will start shipping the Mate X6 to global customers on January 6.

That’s a lot of money – especially for a phone that doesn’t have Google Play support. To be fair, Huawei has been expanding its AppGallery since it launched and it even has bank apps and such. Still, that is a lot of money.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 is also €2,000, though that is for 12/256GB. Of course, you can find it at lower prices now that it’s a few months old. However, the Galaxy Z Fold7 should launch at the same price and it will be more similar to the Z Fold Special Edition (10.6mm folded, 236g) than the current model (12.1mm folded, 239g). For comparison, the Mate is 9.9mm folded and weighs 239g. The Z Fold6 has 50+10+12MP cameras, but the Z Fold7 is expected to pack a 200MP main. The Galaxy is no battery champ with only 4,400mAh in its tank and 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. The Z Fold7 might bring upgrades, but we’re not holding our breath.

The Mate has a larger cover display (6.45” 120Hz LTPO) than the Galaxy and a larger inner display too (7.6”). And it has a larger 5,110mAh battery with fast 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. What it’s missing is a dust resistance rating (but it does have IPX8 for protection against water).

The cameras on the Huawei Mate X6 are quite impressive for a foldable – a 50MP main with a variable aperture (f/1.4-f/4.0) and OIS, 48MP 90mm periscope (4x, OIS) and a 40MP ultrawide (13mm, 120°).

We have plenty of camera samples in our Mate X6 hands-on. We have more articles on the X6 in the pipeline too, so stay tuned.

What other foldables are out there? In the European market, not that many. There is the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, for example. It folds to 10.5mm and is relatively heavy at 257g. It has a 6.3” cover display and an 8” inner display. The cameras include a 48MP main, 10.8MP 112mm periscope and a 10.5MP ultrawide (127°). The Pixel has a 4,650mAh battery with 21W wired and only 7.5W wireless charging.

The Honor Magic V3 goes for €2,000 (that seems to be the price point of choice for horizontal foldables) for a 12/512GB unit. It has a 6.43” cover and 7.92” inner displays and folds down to just 9.2mm. It’s light too, weighing 226g (or a few grams more, depending on which back you like). It is equipped with a 50MP main, 50MP 90mm periscope and a 40MP ultrawide (16mm, 112°). The battery has 5,150mAh capacity and charges at 66W over a wire and at 50W wirelessly.

For the Indian market, the Honor Magic V3 will launch soon, while the vivo X Fold3 Pro is already available at a price of ₹160,000 for a 16/512GB unit.

What do you think – is the Huawei Mate X6 worth the money and something you will consider for your next upgrade or not?
