Hamden To Host Kwanzaa Celebration

Press release from Town of Hamden

HAMDEN, CT — The Town of Hamden will host a Kwanzaa Celebration on Friday, Dec. 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thornton Wilder Hall in the Miller Cultural Complex, located at 2901 Dixwell Avenue in Hamden.

Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday and a time for families and communities to come together to remember the past and to celebrate African American culture.

Please join us in this celebration as we learn about the seven principles and the candle lighting ceremony of Kwanzaa, which originated in 1966 by Maulana Ron Karenga. The cultural holiday celebrates history, values, family, community, and culture based on African principles and ideals and the first fruits or harvest celebrations traditionally observed in many parts of Africa.

Friday’s Kwanzaa Celebration will include family activities, refreshments, and discussion about the holiday and the principle of the day Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) – to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.

The Kwanzaa Celebration is presented by Hamden’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Human Services and is held in cooperation with the Mayor’s Office.
