One more round of valley rain, mountain snow before the New Year

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Sunday, Utah! Today will start off with temperatures well above average across the state and quiet conditions.

Daytime highs will climb into the upper 40s to low 50s in the north and mid to upper 50s in the south. Southern Utah will have mostly sunny skies while the north stays partly to mostly cloudy.

Don’t get too comfortable, because a cold front passes this evening bringing more valley rain and mountain snow to the north.

This round of wet weather will be much less soggy than what we’ve seen the last few days and will be brief. On the backside of the cold front temperatures will drop significantly, so there’s a chance of some valley flurries Monday morning, but most of the moisture will be gone by then.

Mountain snow totals will be modest, only about 4 to 8 inches are expected Sunday night through Monday morning. The extra heavy, wet snow is making for very unstable snowpack in northern and central mountains.

The avalanche risk is high to extreme and both human-triggered and natural avalanches are very likely on slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

After Monday morning a cold, dry airmass settles in, dropping high temperatures down to the 30s in the north and 40s to low 50s in the south. Conditions stay chilly and dry into the New Year. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will have a mix of sun and clouds with overnight lows in the 20s.
