Utah mom, 23, dies days after giving birth, community gathers to support family

CEDAR HILLS, Utah (ABC4) — Today, a community, a neighborhood, and a family are all rallying together to support Sam Hughes. He’s a new dad whose twin babies are in the NICU. His wife, 23-year-old Morgan, passed away unexpectedly just nine days after giving birth to the twins.

“Sam is the one person you want to have marry your sister, knowing that he’s strong and willing to do anything for her,” Justin Hodson told ABC4.com. He and his brother, Kaden, have nothing but good things to say about their brother-in-law.

“Sam is the one person that can do this,” Kaden added.

The brothers welcomed Sam into the family nearly two years ago when he married their sister Morgan.

“She was the most loyal person that you could have ever been around,” Justin said of his sister. “If you were in her corner, she would have done anything for you. Just caring and loving.”

Kaden described Morgan’s traits, saying, “No matter what she stood for what she believed in and what she thought was right, especially, like Justin said, for family.”

They said family has always been a priority, and being a mom was always a dream for Morgan. Even as a little girl, they said she would take care of babies.

When it was her time to finally become a mom, her pregnancy came with a surprise: Twins! Justin told ABC4.com that this was exciting news for the whole family. Justin said, “Everyone was like, ‘That’s Morgan. Out of everyone, she deserves to have twins.’”

On Dec. 19, Morgan gave birth to Hudson and Georgia.

“All the doctors and nurses said she was just a rockstar. A perfect birth,” Justin told ABC4 News. He said the babies were small and Georgia needed some help breathing. However, the babies and mom were healthy.

“She was just proud and happy,” Justin said. “She couldn’t wait to get into the NICU to see those babies.”

Kaden said almost immediately the family was happy to see that Hudson looked like a mini–Sam and Georgia looked like a mini-Morgan.

A few days later, Morgan wasn’t feeling well. After a few fainting spells, the brothers said their parents took Morgan to the hospital. On Dec. 28, they say doctors found high levels of white blood cells, a possible sign of leukemia. Sadly, Morgan passed away.

The neighborhood Morgan grew up in is now lined with blue ribbons and yellow balloons, flowers and food have been pouring into her parents’ home, and messages from people who knew Morgan (many from Texas where she served a service mission for the LDS church) are coming in from all over the country.

“It’s really cool to see how many people Morgan touched,” Kaden stated. “And (how they) felt special because Morgan made them feel special.”

As the family works through the grief of losing Morgan and celebrating the birth of two beautiful babies, a few GoFundMe fundraisers have been started to help Sam with all the unexpected expenses he will be facing. A notable GoFundMe is organized by his cousin and includes a Venmo account to donate directly to the family.

The family is grateful for all the support that has been sent Sam’s way. They hope this will help him be able to focus on raising the twins, who are still in the NICU. At this time, Kaden and Justin said their family is focusing on helping Sam adjust to his new role as a dad.

“When we get to hold those babies it’s the one place that kind of everything disappears,” Kaden said. “It’s just us and those babies, and Sam.”
