IDOT giving road safety tips ahead of winter weather

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — With extreme weather on the way, all eyes are on the roads. Whether your area gets snow or not, the cold temperatures alone will still affect road conditions.

And with these conditions likely bleeding into the work week, IDOT has a few tips to follow on your daily commute, or any other reason you’re hitting the roads.

Different tips provided are to be followed before driving, while driving and even for the worst-case scenario.

IDOT spokesperson Paul Wapple said the first thing to consider is if the trip you’re taking is necessary. Then, when you do get on the roads, stay patient: Drive under the speed limit and give snowplows room to do their job.

Wapple is also offering tips for if you break down or crash.

“Make sure your gas tank is full,” he said. “Always have an emergency kit that has jumper cables, flares, reflectors, windshield washer fluid and ice scraper traction material like kitty litter or sand, blankets, nonperishable foods and bottled water, first aid kit and, of course, a cell phone and charge battery in case of an emergency.”

Wapple also said you should tell family or friends what route you’re taking.

IDOT also may pre-treat parts of the road that freeze quicker like bridges and shaded areas. Another great resource Wapple said to check out is gettingaroundillinois.com, which is a website that tells you about travel conditions 24/7.
