How to reverse videos in CapCut (step by step)
CapCut is primarily a mobile app, and we’ll demo it here on an iPhone running iOS 17. If you’re an Android user, CapCut can be found on the Google Play Store as well. Plus, desktop versions are offered for both Mac and Windows.

1. Import footage to play backwards in CapCut
When you’re working in CapCut, you can reverse any video clip! Your first step is to choose and import a video to reverse. Begin by opening CapCut on your device. Then, look to the bottom of your screen. There, you’ll see the toolbar menu with four options: Edit, Templates, Inbox, and Me.
Choose Edit by tapping on it. You’ll be taken to CapCut’s main project panel. In CapCut, projects are working video files. They group your multimedia and effects together as you edit a video. To reverse a video, you can choose an existing project. Or, you can make a new one.
To start a fresh project, tap New project at the top of your screen. When you do, your Camera Roll opens. Here’s where you can browse to and select one or more video clips. Tap their thumbnails, and when you’ve made your selections, select the blue Add button in the lower right corner.
CapCut will import your footage, and you’ll see it on the video preview. Now, you’re ready to reverse the clip for amazing dramatic results.
2. Open the edit panel
With your video added to CapCut, take a look at the layout onscreen. As I mentioned, you’ll see the clip previewed in the upper center. Directly below this preview panel is the Timeline. On CapCut’s Timeline, you can move through video clips frame by frame. And you can sort, rearrange, and sequence media for the perfect fit in your projects.
Below the Timeline, at the very bottom of the CapCut screen, is the toolbar. The toolbar is a row of menu options. These control effects, edits, and other visual changes that you can make in a video. To reverse a video in CapCut, you’ll want to open the Edit panel.
To do that, look to the far left of the toolbar menu. There, you’ll see the Edit button. Tap it to open the menu panel.
3. Find and apply the reverse video effect
With the Edit panel selected, watch as the toolbar transforms. You’ll now see the long list of CapCut Edit options. Scroll to the right to see even more of them. Just past halfway across, you’ll see the Reverse button.
Ready to reverse your video clip? Simply tap Reverse. CapCut will set about reversing your video clip. Depending on the length and level of pixel detail, this may take a few moments.
When it completes, you can play your video back from the beginning. As you can see, it now plays backwards! The duration doesn’t change, but the entire clip is reversed from start to finish.
