Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé announced in a statement that Quebecers will be able to go to specialized clinics to receive surgeries in orthopaedics, ear-nose-throat, gynecology and urology.
Previously, such access had been limited to procedures for cataracts and hip and knee replacements. According to the government, more than 260,000 Quebecers will be able to obtain their surgeries thanks to these clinics.
The new regulation will go into effect Dec. 19.
The government hopes the use of private and public sector resources will reduce waiting lists for surgeries.
“As part of our health plan, our objective is clear: improve access for Quebecers,” Dubé said in the announcement. “That’s why we’re working to allow patients who have been waiting for months to access surgery and at no cost.
“We must continue to prioritize patients by focusing on the complementarity of the public and private networks.”
